Biography

After a surreptitious trip through East Germany, Lanzmann wrote a series of articles in 1950 for the French daily "Le Monde" titled "Germany Behind the Iron Curtain", prompting Jean-Paul Sartre to invite him to work on Sartre’s newspaper, "Les Temps Modernes". Lanzmann took over as publisher of the paper in 1986. He travelled extensively with Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, with whom he began a long relationship in 1952.

The three of them helped publicise the cause of Algerian independence. Lanzmann visited Israel for the first time in 1952. In 1958, he travelled to North Korea and China as part of a delegation that also included filmmakers Chris Marker and Armand Gatti.
